Furniture is often terrible for the environment.

It’s made from non-renewable materials, finished with toxic chemicals and then at the end of the product’s life?

It’s disposed of in landfill.

If you want to help change this, you need our picks for the very best sustainable furniture brands

Our Best Sustainable Furniture Brands

What We Make

If you’re looking for handcrafted furniture made from reclaimed wood for your minimalist bedroom, kitchen, or wherever, then you need What We Make from Chicago.

They’ve been in the furniture business for nearly 2 decades but 5 years ago, they transitioned to using only reclaimed materials.

There are no VOCs or other toxins used in finishing their products, either.

What We Make

Alabama Sawyer

The folks at Alabama Sawyer have a simple principle, “Trees fall y’all.”

And that means that they only use tree waste from their local forests to create their furniture and by doing so, they’ve saved thousands of logs from ending up in landfills.

They’ve turned those logs into attractive tables, shelves, desks and more, and every last piece is made by hand.

Greenington

Greenington is one of our favorite brands to appear on Made Trade and that’s because the furniture they make is truly beautiful.

It’s all made from renewable natural resources and the company is committed to ensuring that everyone involved in their processes must be paid a fair wage.

The core material they use is bamboo which is much easier to replace than trees are.

Urban Wood Goods

Urban Wood Goods’ founder Erin True began by making a bench from reclaimed wood for her own usse and she liked it so much that she turned it into a cottage industry.

Today, she’s made thousands of wooden products and all of them from demolition wood waste and salvaged metals that would otherwise have gone to waste.

They only ship to North America because they want to discourage shipping emissions.

Simbly

The name is the combination of the words Simple and Assembly.

They are all about minimalist sustainable furniture with a very modern feel.

We like their modular approach to furniture design that allows you to rearrange it in nearly endless combinations to get attractive layouts in any room in your home.

Everything is sold direct to consumer too, which means no unreasonable pricing.

West Elm’s “Sustainably Sourced”

Not everything at West Elm is sustainable and it’s worth noting that their other ranges may not be very eco-friendly but their “sustainably sourced” range is.

They use FSC certified or reclaimed wood for this range and it now makes up 60% of the furniture that they sell overall.

They’re not perfect but as a big player, they’re bringing manufacturing home to the USA and are striving to become more and more eco-friendly, and that’s worth supporting.

Masaya & Co

Another awesome Made Trade partner for furniture is Masaya & CO, they make “sustainable style” furniture and they’ve got a wealth of products to choose from.

Their raw materials are responsibly harvested hardwoods and are finished in low VOC oils.

Watch out for the cushions though, they’re made with acrylics and that’s not as eco-friendly as the rest of their products.

Emeco

Emeco have been trading for nearly 70 years and they make their products today exclusively from recycled materials.

Their main material is recycled aluminum but they also use cork and reclaimed wood and the energy density of their finished products is among the lowest in the business.

Their workforce is mainly Amish craftspeople who are all paid a fair wage.

Medley

Medley was founded from someone’s apartment in 2005 and now they’re a major brand with their own manufacturing facilities.

They use bamboo and FSC certified wood to create attractive, affordable furniture that everyone can appreciate.
